The Big Wave World Tour continued yesterday on its 3rd stop of the 2010/2011 circuit. This time it was the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic – an iconic wave for extreme surfers and this year, its 6th consecutive one, was no exception.

After a spectacular day’s surfing and thrilling final Kohl Christensen took the honours with Chris Bertish and Jamie Sterling runners-up.

Although 21′ waves had been predicted the day started with magnificent 40 footers. Plus. This was the first year that the organisers had banished tow-in in favour of a greener footprint. Actually, if the truth be told, the organizers had included a paddle element to the competition for the past 2 years and the feedback they received was overwhelming – the competitors, spectators, and sponsors all wanted to see Nelscott as a paddle in contest only.

The day’s massive conditions made accessing the wave a tad difficult and it took nearly an hour to get the competition underway. But this wasn’t a disadvantage. By the time the surfers got out there the conditions couldn’t have been more perfect.

In fact, John Forse, event organizer and Nelscott pioneer, noted that he saw the biggest wave ever on the reef in the morning. Forse had made his first attempt to ride the reef way back in 1995.

Gary Linden, Tour director, was out in the water all day “It was an extremely high level of intensity. The semi final heats were really mayhem”, he said.

Mayhem it might have been but an amazing day of surfing was had on the reef and six men made it through to the finals. Kohl Christensen, Chris Bertish, Kealii Mamala, Rusty Long, Peter Mel, and Jamie Sterling battled it out for the honours. Despite having come third in the event Jamie Sterling, the current points leader on the tour, solidified his position and Peter Mel moved into second place.

“I have a lot of respect for some of the older guys we invited that have chosen to step aside and let some of the up and coming talent take a turn”, said John Forse. “People like Gary Linden and Ross Clarke Jones have given up their spots for younger surfers to have a chance. It is the ultimate show of sportsmanship in my opinion”.

For the 1st time ever in a Big Wave Event, a women’s exhibition will take place with 7 of the world best charging women coming to tackle Nelscott Reef. That event is being held today…

The Big Wave Contest began in April 2010 and will end in March 2011. The waves being surfed are Punta de Lobas – Chile, Pico Alto – Peru, Nelscott Reef – Oregan USA, Mavericks – California USA and Todos Santos – Baja Mexico.

It is being mooted that Kelly Slater, the surfing world’s biggest star and a man about to win his 10th ASP World title, might join the Big Wave World Tour. After all, what else is there left for “the king” to do? Very few riders become big wave surfers but Slater is no novice to the big wave scene having surfed Mavericks in 2000 and in 2002 won the prestigious Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, Hawaii and been a finalist at the Eddie again in 2009.

Squats Analysis

Some physicians condemn squats citing how destructive they are to the knees despite scientific studies and millions of personal experiences to the contrary. One sports medicine doctor explained to me why squats were considered to be bad for the knee. He was actually telling me this between his sets of squats! Since sports medicine doctors only see people with injuries, one can guess why they may have developed this belief. The individuals they treat certainly do not a constitute a random sample, let alone a representative population, as any scientist knows is essential to even attempt to formulate inferences.

The NSCA position statement notes:

“Some reports of high injury rate may be based on biased samples. Others have attributed injuries to weight training, including the squat, which could have been caused by other factors. Injuries attributed to the squat may result not from the exercise itself, but from improper technique, pre-existing structural abnormalities, other physical activities, fatigue or excessive training.”

An early study suggested deep knee bends with weights (squats) were hazardous to the ligamentuous structures of the knee. Later studies conclude squats improve knee stability if the lifting technique does not place rotary stress on the knee (Fleck and Falkel, 1986).

The NSCA state:

“Squats, when performed correctly and with appropriate supervision, are not only safe, but may be a significant deterrent to knee injuries.”

Torque Force:

Contrary to propaganda to the contrary, prominent weight training authorities demonstrate the squat with the knees flexing forward at the same distance as the hips flex backwards. Fredrick Hatfield, Ph.D., the first man to squat over 800 lbs, recommends the knees to extend over the feet with the back more upright for quadriceps development. “Strength Training for Young Athletes”" by Steven J. Fleck, PhD and William J.Kraemer, PhD, illustrate parallel squats with the knees extending beyond the feet (knees moving forward with same magnitude as hip moving backwards).

Torque force is necessary for the muscles and joint structures to adapt to the respected overload. If the knee does not travel forward during the barbell squat, the quadriceps muscles are not significantly exercised. On the other hand, injury may result if the knee or lower back experience greater torque forces than what they are accustom.

Fry et. al. (2003) examined the hip and knee torque forces of variations of parallel barbells squats and concluded appropriate joint loading during this exercise may require the knees to move slightly past the toes.

Simplified Method:

Try this simplified qualitative method in determining relative torque forces in the knee and hip joints. First take a photograph of the barbell squat in a full decent with a perspective perpendicular to the joints plane. Draw a line of force through the resistance on its center of gravity, straight up and down, parallel to the force of gravity. Gravity acting on both the body mass and added mass (barbell) contribute to the resistance. On the barbell squat, the center of gravity is between the forefoot and heel. If it is not, the individual will fall over, toward the center of gravity. Incidentally, compression forces act upon the joints during the squat stance.

During the execution of a barbell squat, the knees and the hips travel in opposite directions away from the foot, or away from the center of gravity. Draw a second line on the knee joint parallel to the line of force. Draw a third line on the hip joint parallel to the previous lines. A relative comparison can be made on the torque forces of the knee and hip. Typically the torque forces are similar for the knee and hip joints on the barbell squat; the knees travel forward the same magnitude as the hips travel backwards. Generally speaking, during a powerlift type squat (bar lower behind the shoulders and a wider stance) the knee does not travel forward as far as a bodybuilding type squat. The hips typically travel back further with the torso bent forward on a powerlift type squat. This emphasizes the stronger hip extensors and consequently reduces knee extensor involvement. Knee torque is further reduced by a wide stance.

Rotary Force:

The practice of adopting foot rotation to selectively strengthen individual muscles of the quadriceps is not supported by the literature (Boyden 2000; Signorile 1995). Knee rotation during the squat can increase the risk of injury (Fleck and Falkel, 1986). Signorile, et. al. states:

“Extreme outward toe point greatly reduces stability, it does not allow the proper drift of the hips as the lifter descends… Extreme inward toe points are equally dangerous, coupling the same problems of stability, base size and lower body drift with the added danger of bringing the knees together…this movement would place high stress on all connective tissue.”

Full (Deep) Squat

Kreighbaum (1996) illustrate the safe position of a deep squat with the knees extending beyond the toes. Kreighbaum explains how deep squat can be performed little chance of injury to the knee. The variables of concern:

speed of descent

size of calves and thighs

strength of the controlling muscles

The primary danger to the knee occurs when the tissues of the calf and thigh press together altering the center of rotation back to the contact area creating a dislocation effect. The danger of knee injury in this situation may be prevented if either of the following factor are present:

center of gravity of the body system is keep forward of the altered center of rotation

muscles of the thigh are strong enough to prevent the body from resting or bouncing on the calves.

Kreighbaum conclude the deep squat is of little danger to the knees unless these variables and factors are disregarded. Certainly only a limit type of athletes may have a sports specific need to perform a full squat. Olympic weightlifters commonly bounce out of a full front squat with near maximum resistances during both the Clean & Jerk and Snatch. Incidentally, the wide stance during an Olympic style squat further reduces knee torque forces.

During the lower portions of the deep squat the lower back may flex if hip flexibility is inadequate. The risk of injury is increased if the muscles of the lower back are not strong enough to support the flexed spine or the joint structures have not progressively adapted to such a stress. Flexibility exercises can be performed if hip flexibility is insufficient for deep, or full squats.

Customization:

If the body has not adapted to a greater torque force, injury can result. It is not necessary to avoid the torque force if the muscles and joint structures can adapt. Of the hip and knee joint, the knee is more vulnerable to injury than the hip due to structural and functional differences. Certainly, if an individual has had a history of knee pain associated with these types of movements, the squat can be modified to place more torque on the hip and consequently less on the knee joint. Based on the above analysis, this can be accomplished two ways. Simply by not squatting down all the way (e.g. 90°) both the knees and hip do not experience as great of torque forces. Although, this decrease is often off set by the tendency to add more weight to the exercise. Alternatively, by bending at the hip more than the knee, the knee will travel forward less, as in the powerlifting type squat. Recall, the quadriceps will not be exercises as intensely since there is less torque on the knee joint. In addition, since balance must be maintained over the feet, bending over not only transfers more torque to the hips, the torque forces through the spine (lower back) increase; another vulnerable joint for some. Certainly a compromise must be made to evenly distribute the torque force between the knee and the hip / lower back, particularly when both the knees and lower back are healthy.

If the ankle is not flexible enough to allow the knee to travel forward sufficiently, the back will need to be bent forward more to maintain the center of gravity within the foot base. Consequently the lower back with be subjected to greater torque forces. Squatting with the feet wide apart can alleviate part of the problem, allowing the back to be positioned more upright. This solution does not, however, distribute equal stresses on the quadriceps and glutes as would be possible with adequate ankle flexibility.

Until flexibility can be restored, a temporary solution is to elevate the ankles on a board or platform. This will allow the knees to travel forward the same distance as the hip travels backwards. Elevating the heels may present a risk to individuals with adequate ankle flexibility who have not adapted to greater torque forces through the knee. In which case, the knees can potentially travel forward more than what they are accustom. Even when elevating the heels with insufficient ankles flexibility, resistance should begin light and progress only 5-10% every workout until a true workout weight is achieved so joint adaptation can occur.

Obviously, individuals who are at a higher risk for specific types of knee pain may choose to avoid certain exercises specifically designed to emphasis the quadriceps involvement by increased knee torque (e.g. front squats, sissy squats, safety squats, barbell hack squats, leg extensions). Likewise, individuals who are at a greater risk for particular types of lower back pain may choose to avoid certain exercises specifically designed to lower back involvement by increased lower back torque (e.g. squats, deadlifts) or hip torque (e.g. deep glute exercises).

From world-famous names and venues like the Comedy Store to newcomers in rooms over pubs, London offers the world’s greatest selection of live comedy.

Comedy Store
Without doubt this is the daddy of all comedy clubs. Seven nights a week you can see some of the best comedy anywhere on the planet. Apart from the corking bills every Thursday to Saturday check out the brilliant Comedy Store Players (Wed and Sun), the fantastic Cutting Edge Team (Tue), while the Gong Show on the last Monday of every month is simply not to be missed.

Comedy Camp
This intimate straight-friendly gay club based in the heart of Soho is one of the best nights out of comedy anywhere in the capital. The audiences are always up for a great night and resident host and promoter Simon Happily only books fabulous acts.

Banana Cabaret
Satisfaction guaranteed every Friday and Saturday at this exciting club in a big roundhouse setting at the Bedford Arms in Balham. Promoter Dave Vickers knows the business inside out.

Downstairs at the King’s Head
Founded back in 1981, this Crouch End venue is still run with huge enthusiasm by immensely knowledgeable promoter Pete Grahame. It’s a friendly place where comedians can experiment and play around with complete freedom.

Jongleurs Battersea
Flagship of the Jongleurs chain and established back in 1983, it’s a place that’s synonymous with an unashamedly businesslike approach to comedy. Powerful bills, but it’s the overall package with food and post-show dancing that really counts.

Comedy Café
Situated in Shoreditch, this is another purpose-built club set up by a comedian. Noel Faulkner mainly keeps to the back room now, but his influence can be felt in the emphasis on inviting bills and satisfied punters.

Headliners
The only purpose-built club in west London (what is it that makes that side of the city such infertile ground for comedy?) with highly experienced Simon Randall, who also operates Ha Bloody Ha in nearby Ealing Studios, at the helm.

Hampstead Comedy Club
Comedian Ivor Dembina, who hosts this Saturday night club, advocates a no-frills approach. He hates the sound of people scoffing food during a show. He detests the idea of a disco afterwards. Instead, he invests everything in booking interesting and exciting acts.

Bearcat Club
Out in suburban Twickenham and one of London’s oldest clubs. All the big acts have played here. Well worth a Saturday night visit, but not on a day when the England rugby team have a game.

Chuckle Club
In the course of 24 years Eugene Cheese’s club has found itself in many different venues. Now it seems to have found a permanent home in the Tutu’s bar in King’s College. A mix of top-ranking and newer comics, and a big emphasis on fun. There are few more enjoyable places to have a great night out than here. These guys really know how to put a bill together.

Up The Creek
This legendary club in Greenwich has been around for donkey’s years and still holds its own. It’s well-known for its lively slightly bear pit-like atmosphere where only the strongest comics survive. However, on a Sunday night there’s a much more chilled feel to the ‘Sunday Special Club’ which make it the perfect place to end the weekend.

Soho Theatre
Over the last few years the Soho Theatre has become one of the places in London to see comics break out of their normal club sets to perform more substantial solo shows. There is always a good mix of the best in homegrown and international talent on display.

I have been seeing this all over the internet i like it on the counter,i like it on the carpet,i like it on the ceramic,i like it on the flo,i like it on the door,i like it on the house,i like it on the wall,i like it on the ground, i like it on the concrete,i like it on the ceiling but what does this really mean.I am seeing this a lot on women facebook status pages.Could they really be saying what they really like who knows. This is a game women are playing on facebook go figure. They are simply saying were they like there handbag. This is real funny because the buzz got so big and everyone is wondering what the phrase i like it on the counter,i like it on the carpet,i like it on the ceramic,i like it on the flo,i like it on the door,i like it on the house,i like it on the wall,i like it on the ground, i like it on the concrete,i like it on the ceiling. So let finish the statements my (handbag) i like it on the counter,(handbag)i like it on the carpet,(handbag)i like it on the ceramic,(handbag)i like it on the flo,(handbag)i like it on the door,(handbag)i like it on the house,(handbag)i like it on the wall,(handbag)i like it on the ground,(handbag) i like it on the concrete,(handbag)i like it on theceiling, now some of this i can understand but some of these places hmmmm I just don’t know. I like it on the counter if you are in a hurry yes i can understand why you would like it on the counter. I would also think I like it on the carpet and I like it on the flo is the same thing so this means you are dropping it down and stepping all over it lol.

Now I like it on the ceramic could mean a counter also and even the floor not really sure what they mean by this one. I like it on the door seems like the best place because now its out the way. I like it on the house kind of puzzles me unless they really want to do all this work to get it down when they need there handbag.I like it on the wall well this is funny because all the men have to get there heads out of left field.I like it on the ground well hmmm lets think about this the ground wow do you live outside are is that were you keep your handbag this is not really clear sorry. I like it on the concrete here is another one that makes me say hmmm the concrete maybe I shouldn’t comment on this one. I like it on the ceiling I didn’t know a handbag could be put on the ceiling I guess this is a new workout plan lol. This is what I found out about the I like it facebook game.

Since you know what everyone is talking about now you should join in the fun.You could see how many people you can make say how in the—- and enjoy yourself at the same time. This is one way to enjoy your time on facebook and communicate with your friends. I am sure there will be another game that will start soon but lets just enjoy this one for the time being. So men can say I like it where ever but I hope you guys are not talking about your handbag, men will have to create there own meaning. I like it facebook will have plenty of twist and a long time for fun.If you follow the link you can chose different I like games hope you enjoyed. Please visit I like it facebook game and vote on your favorite phrase.
