Everyone knows that when you hop on a motorcycle, you risk life and limb, but not always in that order. It’s easy to forgo safety when you know what you are doing is characteristically unsafe. “What’s the use?” someone might ask, but just because you are taking a risk, doesn’t mean you should expose yourself to unnecessary danger. Yes, riding a motorcycle is hazardous, but so is driving a car, playing sports and even walking down stairs. What matters most is the steps you take to minimize your risk. When you walk down the stairs, you hold on to the railing. When you drive a car, you put on a seatbelt. When you hop on a motorcycle, you need to WEAR A HELMET!

It is mind boggling to see motorcyclists cruising down the expressway, weaving in an out of traffic with their bare noggin exposed to the world. It’s as if the thought of instant death or paralysis has never crossed their mind. If you fall off a motorcycle, bottom line, you will get hurt. However, there is a stark difference between being injured and losing your life, and the right helmet makes all the difference.

By not wearing a helmet you are asking a die. The right protective gear lowers your chances of death or serious brain injury dramatically. You might think you are a safe rider, that you have your hog under control. So did my dad.

Every summer my dad would take us to the Jersey shore, and everyday he would wake up early and take his 1975 Triumph Trident out for a cruise along the beach. As my dad was stopped at a red light, a woman on a car-phone rear ended him and sent him flying forty feet in the air. He landed on the pavement and broke a majority of his ribs, his pelvis, and a few vertebrae. As far as his head went, the helmet he was wearing absorbed most of the impact. The doctor later told him that if he weren’t wearing a helmet they would have had to scoop his brains off the side of the road. That helmet saved my dad’s life, and I am lucky he was wearing one. A minor accident on a motorcycle can quickly become a tragedy when a helmet isn’t worn.

If you ride a motorcycle and you don’t own a helmet, I implore you to go out and get one immediately. It can mean the difference between staying put on this planet or riding the stairway to heaven. You might have some preconceived notions about helmets making you look dorky or less than cool, but you couldn’t be more wrong.  With today’s modern options you can get a stylish helmet that fits your ride and personality. You can strap on a spiked Kaiser to match your rumbling chopper, or pick up a chic full-face sport style helmet to complement your speedy crotch-rocket. Whatever you decide on, if you don’t already have a helmet you need to go out and get one immediately. You never know when it’s going to save your life.

Saturday’s Speedway World Cup Event One has been postponed until Sunday due to adverse weather conditions in Gorzow, Poland. Following a track inspection and consideration of the local weather forecasts, the FIM Jury took the decision to postpone the clash between Poland, Denmark, Russia and the Czech Republic. The Jury has decided to restage the meeting at 3pm CET (2pm UK time) on Sunday. All tickets for the clash will be valid for the re-arranged meeting. Great Britain get their challenge under way in King’s Lynn on Monday at 7pm against Finland, Australia and Sweden. The Race-off featuring the second and third placed teams from Events 1 & 2 will be in Vojens, Denmark on July 29th. The Final will be on 31st July, also in Vojens.

Tongan international Willie Manu says he is flattered to be considered for an England call-up.He now qualifies for England on residency grounds, having moved to the United Kingdom in 2006 – initially to play for Castleford – and he was brought into England coach Steve McNamara’s squad for a get-together in Liverpool this week as part of the preparation for the end-of-season Four Nations series.

“Whilst I will always be proud of my Tongan heritage, I am honoured to have been recognised by the England national team,” said Manu.

“I was flattered to receive the call from Steve McNamara to join the players this week and, if I was to be given the chance to play at this level, it would be something I would have to consider.

“To play alongside the best players in the English game whilst challenging the strongest players from the world of rugby league and testing yourself at the highest level is the aim of every professional sportsmen and, if selected for England, this would give me the chance to do that.”

.”It’s a hot potato,” said Agar. “If Steve picks him, he’ll open himself up for some criticism, but if he picks him and England win the Four Nations, he’ll be judged as a hero.

“Most other sports do it – a lot of players Australia pick have been born and bred in New Zealand – and Willie by rights qualifies for England on residency grounds, as he would in cricket or rugby union.

“What I do know is that he’s a player that can win you a game so, from an ability and form perspective, I don’t think there’s any argument.

“He’s a long way off selection but, if he wants to represent England and Steve is prepared to pick him, I think we should support him.

“It’s up to Steve,” he said. “There is nothing illegal in what he’s done and I’ll back him in every way I can because I want England to do well.

“Whoever is coach, the selection wouldn’t please everybody. You’ve got to accept that some selections are easier than others.”

“We don’t get many opportunities to get the country’s elite players together so the chance to work alongside the Royal Marines was really useful.

“All the players involved are potential candidates for selection for this year’s Four Nations but that’s not to say the final squad will come from this group. It’s certainly not a definitive list.

“As well as the boys who are playing in Australia, there are many other players to consider. The door remains wide open for anyone to play themselves into contention for selection over the next couple of months.

“It’s not just about ability – Tuesday was all about making sure we continue to develop the right culture for England to achieve international success that we began in last year’s Four Nations and continued in the mid-season international.”
